Can Sheikh Hasina get asylum in Britain? Know what the immigration rule there says
The 2-month-long protest against reservation in Bangladesh turned into anti-government violence on Monday. Amidst the violence that took place yesterday, there were reports of a coup from the neighboring country. Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and left the country. After she left Dhaka, the Bangladesh Army announced that it would now run the government. Hasina has reached India from Dhaka via Agartala. There were reports that Hasina could go to London from India. However, due to not getting clearance yet, Sheikh Hasina is in India with her sister Sheikh Rehana. According to sources, the Indian government has asked Hasina to tell her future plans. The Indian government has made it clear that Hasina cannot stay here for a long time.
In such a situation, the question arises that why does Sheikh Hasina want to go to Britain? What status can she get from Britain as a refugee and temporary refugee? What are the rules in Britain for immigration or becoming a refugee? NDTV tried to find answers to these questions from the UK Home Ministry.
The UK Home Ministry said, “British immigration rules do not allow a person to travel to that country for asylum or temporary asylum. Asylum seekers should try to seek asylum in the same country where they have first arrived.”
The UK Home Ministry said, “We have a good record of providing protection to people in need. But there is no provision in our immigration rules for anyone to travel to the UK for asylum or temporary asylum. Those who need international protection should first seek asylum in the same country where they have left their country.”
What is the difference between asylum and refugee?
A refugee is a temporary refugee who has fled from his native country to another country. This is done due to the fear of being persecuted in his own country due to caste, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion. According to the United Nations 1951 Convention and 1967 Protocol, there must be a solid reason to prove the fear of a refugee. They have to prove that their life is in danger in their country.
Asylum is given to a person of foreign origin who fulfills the international law definition of a refugee. When the country is sure that the person of foreign origin is actually a ‘refugee’, then he is given asylum.
What are the rules for becoming a refugee in Britain?
To take asylum in the United Kingdom (Britain), an application has to be made to the UK Home Office. The Home Ministry takes the final decision to grant asylum or reject the application. According to the rules, after receiving the application of the asylum seeker, the first thing that happens is a meeting with the immigration officer. This is called screening in technical terms. During the screening, many questions are asked to the asylum seeker, so that it can be known why he has left his country. Is his life really in danger in his country? If he is granted asylum, will it pose any threat to his country? After knowing and understanding the answers to all these questions, a report is prepared. Then finally the Home Ministry decides whether asylum should be granted or the application should be rejected.
How many years can one stay in the UK after getting asylum?
If a person succeeds in getting refugee status in the UK, he is given official refugee status. In this case, he can stay there for at least 5 years. During this time, he is given protection under international laws. There is also a rule in the UK that if a refugee does not want to return to his country, he will not be forced to do so. The UK government also gives refugees the right to get health care and education.
