Muhammad Yunus to Take Oath: Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus will become the head of Bangladesh’s interim government. He is returning from Paris and will take the oath on Thursday. His advisory committee is likely to have 15 members.
Yunus will arrive in Dhaka from Paris at 2:10 PM on Thursday and will be sworn in at 8:00 PM. Around 400 people are expected to attend the ceremony. Yunus’s advisory team will help him run the government.
General’s Support: Bangladesh’s Army Chief General Wakar-uz-Zaman announced that after speaking with commanders, he believes the situation will improve in a few days. He is confident that Yunus will lead the government well. The army will support Yunus, who is 84 years old. Sheikh Hasina has resigned as Prime Minister due to violent protests and is now in Delhi. Yunus is currently in Paris and will return to Dhaka on Thursday.
Appeal for Peace: Yunus has asked everyone to stay calm. He said that their success will make Bangladesh prosperous and urged people to stop violence and help build a new Bangladesh.
Khaleda Zia Released: Khaleda Zia, the former Prime Minister and BNP leader, has been released from jail. She also sent a video message asking people to avoid violence and maintain peace, saying that peace is needed for the country’s rebuilding.
Ongoing Violence in Bangladesh: Violence continues in Bangladesh, with at least 29 supporters of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party dead. The death toll has reached 469. There is also violence against Hindu minorities. Some people affected by the violence are trying to cross into India, but BSF personnel have stopped many at the border in Jalpaiguri.
Police Headquarters Update: New Police Chief Mohammad Mainul Islam said that some officials are not following proper use-of-force guidelines and are violating human rights. Some student protesters were seen managing traffic in Dhaka.
